Biomaterials Group

Cardiovascular disease is one of the largest “life impact” disease groups in modern society. Techniques to deal with obstructed or narrowed blood vessels rely on the use of biological grafts or synthetic (for example Dacron) products. Current products are subject to complications at the blood material interface and most suffer particularly in small diameter grafts. A biological synthesised graft offers the most opportunity for all patients with renal disease, peripheral vascular disease and coronary artery disease.

Research Focus:

  • This group is building on existing work and aims to produce a wholly synthetic biologically compatible blood vessel within three years.
