The OPCAB Group

The heart-lung machine made heart surgery possible in the 1960s and 1970s. The heart-lung machine itself produces inflammatory related effects on the lung, brain and small vessels. Techniques for heart surgery without the heartlung machine (OPCAB) are increasingly utilised but have their own technical challenges.

Research Focus:

  • This group will further define the side-effects of the heart-lung machine.
  • It will identify surgical techniques that avoid the use of the heart-lung machine where possible.
  • It will explore the technology and biology of heartlung machines with the intent to improve design and function.
